How to read this ranking
Volatility here is the standard deviation of hourly returns over 7 days, scaled to one day. A reading of 5% means a one-day move of about ±5% is normal for that coin right now.
How the volatility ranking is calculated
Standard deviation scaled to a day
We take the last 7 days of hourly prices, about 168 points, compute the log return of each hour, and measure their standard deviation. Multiplying by the square root of 24 turns hourly volatility into daily volatility. A reading of 4% means that, if the coming days resemble the past week, about two days in three should move less than ±4%, and moves of ±8% should be rare.
Volatility and position sizing
A common use of this number is risk sizing. For the same dollar swing, a position in a coin that moves ±8% a day has to be about a quarter the size of one in a coin that moves ±2%. Stop distances follow the same logic: a stop closer than one day’s normal move is likely to be hit by noise. This is a general risk concept for education, not a sizing recommendation for any coin.
Quiet and loud regimes
Volatility clusters: loud weeks tend to follow loud weeks, and quiet weeks follow quiet ones. Long stretches of unusually low volatility, visible as a flat sparkline and a low reading here, often end in a sharp move, though the direction is not predictable from volatility alone. Comparing a coin with Bitcoin’s reading shows how much extra swing an altcoin carries relative to the market leader.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most volatile cryptocurrency right now?
The first row of this ranking is the coin with the largest typical daily price swing over the last 7 days.
How is volatility calculated here?
We take the standard deviation of hourly returns over 7 days and scale it to one day. A reading of 5% means a ±5% daily move is normal for that coin right now.
Is Bitcoin less volatile than altcoins?
Usually, yes. Bitcoin’s daily volatility is typically well below that of most altcoins because it has the deepest markets. Flip the sort on this page to see where Bitcoin sits among the calmest coins right now.
How is volatility used in position sizing?
For the same dollar risk, a position in a coin that moves ±8% a day is about a quarter the size of one that moves ±2%. This is a general risk concept, not advice on how much to hold.
How often are the crypto rankings updated?
Prices, market caps and volumes refresh from CoinGecko every few minutes while the page is open. RSI, RCI and volatility are recalculated from the latest 7 days of hourly prices on every refresh.
Why are stablecoins hidden by default?
Stablecoins and tokenized funds or gold track off-chain assets, so their RSI, volatility and ATH distance say nothing about the crypto market. Untick "Hide stablecoins & RWAs" to include them.
